A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Lehigh University with a B.A. in History, Lou Benfante is the current President of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the History Department at the Heritage Library on Hilton Head.  An acknowledged expert on the history of Hilton Head Island and the surrounding area, including Savannah, Lou has over 40 years’ experience and multiple professional credentials as a Supply Chain Management executive with leading companies such as Milliken, Estee Lauder, Cummins, and Tenet Healthcare.


Mr. Benfante is a sought-after speaker on historic events of the Lowcountry, teaches courses for the University of South Carolina and the Lifelong Learning Institutes of Beaufort and Hilton Head, and has published numerous articles on the history of Hilton Head Island.  He is a leading expert on the American Civil War events in the surrounding area, especially the Battles of Port Royal and Fort Pulaski as well as the establishment of Mitchelville.


Lou is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Mitchelville Preservation Project, serving as its Education and Research Chairman, and he is a member of the South Carolina Historical Society, Beaufort County Historical Society, Gullah Geechee Consortium of Beaufort County, National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Coastal Discovery Museum.


Lou lives on Hilton Head Island with his wife, Laurette, spends as much time as possible with their seven grandchildren in Atlanta and Long Island, and is an avid golfer, tennis player and bocce enthusiast.
