A graduate of Wittenberg University with an MA from Bowling Green State University and a doctorate in History from the University of South Carolina, Dr. Wise is the Curator and Director of the Parris Island Museum and the Cultural Resource Manager for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot located at Parris Island, South Carolina. Also currently serving as an adjunct history professor for the University South Carolina Beaufort, he additionally has served on the faculty for the renowned Penn Center Gullah Institute, is an advisor to the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust, a Board member of the Beaufort County Historical Society and is on the editorial board for the South Carolina Historical Magazine.

Dr. Wise has written and edited a number of works including Lifeline of the Confederacy: Blockade Running During the Civil War and Gate of Hell: The Campaign for Charleston Harbor 1863,  which was named by the South Carolina Historical Society as the best book written in 1994.  A well-known and sought after battlefield historian and lecturer, Dr. Wise has appeared on the Arts and Entertainment Channel, the History Channel, and the Discovery Channel in addition to various BBC and South Carolina Education TV and Radio productions. He wrote the screen narrative for American Iliad: The Siege of Charleston, a docufilm on the Civil War in the Charleston area. His most recent work, written in conjunction with Dr. Lawrence Rowland, is Rebellion, Reconstruction and Redemption: The History of Beaufort County 1861-1893 to be published in the summer of 2015 by the University of South Carolina Press.

    

A recipient of the Daughters of the American Revolution History Medal Award for service in promoting the history of the United States, he received the 2013 Governor’s Award in the Humanities recognizing outstanding achievement in defining  South Carolina’s cultural heritage. In 1996, he was awarded the Department of the Navy's Cultural Resources Management Award for individual excellence, and his cultural resources programs have won one Department of Defense and three Department of the Navy awards for excellence.


Dr. Wise has also served on the faculty for Penn Center’s Gullah Institute and is an advisor to the South Carolina Battleground Preservation Trust. He is currently serving on the board of the Beaufort County Historical Society and the editorial board for the South Carolina Historical Magazine. He lives in Beaufort, South Carolina and is married to Alice Parsons Wise.
